High Flow Construction  Water Treatment for Mercury
Rapid Response

A construction company contracted ProAct Services Corporation to provide water treatment services for the Paper Plant Construction Project. The company had planned to directly discharge construction pond water directly to a near by river. When the water was tested, it was found to contain mercury and other contaminants above the allowable discharge limits. The client needed to find a company to treat the pond water in a hurry to keep from shutting down the construction activities at the site.

ProAct was contacted on October 17 about the project. We mobilized equipment and personnel to treat water at 5,500 gallons per minute for hydrocarbons and heavy metals in six days! ProAct was treating water on October 23. We provided media vessels, bag filter systems, flow meters and hoses, and manufactured a custom manifold for the treatment system. ProAct Services has four water treatment specialists working two 12 hour shifts each day, 7 days a week to operate the water treatment system.  ProAct operated continuously for 66 days until the construction was complete on December 21.

During the project, ProAct had to take measures to freeze protect the water treatment system including wrapping exposed hoses with heat trace, insulting exposed valves and gauges, and insulating the exposed hoses on the ground.  Frequent water recirculation was used during nights where the temperature dropped below 32 degrees F.

Safety

ProAct Services employees have worked a total of 2345 hours from October 23 to December 21 without a reportable accident.
